How to Wash Custom Bowling Shirts:
The Master Care Guide

BeRetro™ Garment Care & Maintenance

How to protect your custom apparel for a lifetime of striking performance.

Follow these guidelines to maintain vibrant colors, sharp prints, and crisp embroidery.

The 5 Golden Rules of Custom Apparel

Properly caring for your custom BeRetro™ apparel is essential to maintaining the vibrant prints and high-quality finish of our tailoring. Whether your gear features 1950s chainstitch embroidery or modern sublimation, these five universal rules will dramatically extend the lifespan of your garments.

1

Always Turn Inside-Out

Before placing any custom garment in the wash, turn it inside out. This minimizes direct friction between the artwork and the washing machine drum or other garments, preventing the fading of prints and the snagging of embroidery threads.

2

Wash in Cold Water

Always wash your custom gear using a cold water cycle (preferably 30°C or 86°F). Hot water can cause custom dyes to break down, crack thermal prints, and cause cotton-blended fabrics to shrink.

3

Use a Gentle Cycle & Mild Detergent

Choose a gentle or delicate cycle to prevent excessive agitation. Always use a mild liquid detergent. Harsh powdered detergents can act like sandpaper on custom prints, leaving residues that dull the appearance of your artwork.

4

Ban Bleach & Fabric Softeners

These are the enemies of custom apparel. Bleach destroys custom dyes and thread colors. Fabric softeners leave behind a waxy residue that ruins the texture of prints and completely destroys the moisture-wicking properties of performance fabrics.

5

Air Dry for Best Results

High heat is the fastest way to ruin custom apparel. Hang your shirts to dry naturally or lay them flat. If you absolutely must use a machine dryer, ensure it is set to the lowest possible heat setting or "tumble dry no-heat."

Specific Care by Decoration Technique

While the golden rules apply to everything we make, each specific decoration technique has its own unique vulnerabilities. Here is how to handle your specific layout:

Full-Dye Sublimation

Because sublimation ink is permanently gassed into the polyester fibers, the fabric will remain soft and breathable forever. The primary goal is to protect the vibrancy of those molecular dyes. Follow the golden rules closely, using strictly cold water and air drying.

Dry Cleaning Warning: Although dry cleaning is not generally needed, the harsh chemicals used by traditional dry cleaners can interfere with sublimation dyes, causing colors to unexpectedly shift or fade. Stick to standard, gentle home washing.

⚠️ Never iron directly over a sublimated print. If ironing is required, use a low setting on the reverse side of the fabric.

Direct-to-Film (DTF) & Thermal Graphics

DTF technology utilizes a commercial-grade, flexible thermal adhesive to bond the graphic directly to the shirt. The biggest threat to this decoration style is extreme, sustained heat and hard abrasion. Turning the garment inside-out is absolutely mandatory to prevent the graphic from scraping against zippers or buttons in the wash.

⚠️ Heat is the enemy of DTF. Do not use high-heat dryer cycles, as it can re-activate the adhesive and cause the design to peel or crack. NEVER place an iron directly on a DTF print; it will melt.

Classic & Chainstitch Embroidery

Embroidery is the most durable decoration method available, but the physical threads must be protected from snagging. Never wash an embroidered bowling shirt in the same load as items with heavy metal zippers, open velcro, or hooks that can catch and pull the intricate threadwork.

⚠️ To keep the embroidery looking crisp and raised, do not iron directly over the front of the stitching. Iron the garment inside-out, or place a soft pressing cloth between the iron and the embroidery to prevent crushing the 3D texture.

Expert Answers: Stain Removal & Care FAQs

Can I iron a bowling shirt? +

It depends on the decoration. You should never iron directly over a sublimated or DTF print, as it will melt or ruin the design. If you need to iron the shirt, turn it inside-out and use a low heat setting. For embroidered areas, place a soft cloth between the iron and the fabric to avoid crushing the 3D threads.

How do I remove a stain from my custom jersey? +

Spot treat the stain immediately with a mild stain remover or a drop of dish soap. Gently dab the area—do not aggressively scrub, especially if the stain is over a printed graphic. Let the treatment sit for 10-15 minutes before washing in cold water as usual. Never use bleach to remove a stain on custom apparel.

What happens if I use fabric softener? +

Fabric softener works by coating fibers in a waxy layer. On custom apparel, this waxy layer traps odors, degrades the adhesive used in DTF transfers, and completely clogs the moisture-wicking pores of performance fabrics like our AeroWeave™. Always skip the softener.
