The White House is, of course, one of the world’s most recognizable and iconic buildings and, safe to say, there are more than a few surprises to be found behind its hallowed walls…
…not least, a bowling alley in the basement!
It just goes to show what an influential and all-encompassing sport ten pin bowling is!
The White House first had a bowling alley installed in 1947 when the then President, Harry Truman, received an alley in the West Wing as a birthday gift! It’s just a shame that Truman wasn’t really a fan of ten pin bowling! Things changed in 1969, however, when President Richard Nixon was in office because as a big fan of the sport, he decided to have a more comprehensive bowling alley built in the basement of the White House, which you can see below:
