The Lounge Singer of the Week – Madeleine Peyroux

Have you heard Madeleine Peyroux yet? No? You really should.

First, let’s talk about her voice. There is a lyric from her song “Bare Bones” when she sings “warm whisky.” That seems perfect. Her voice is somehow full and delicate at the same time. A smile of wisdom from heavy experience lives in her phrasing in a way that reminds me of Billie Holiday. Her distinctive voice sounds just as good whether she’s singing in English or French.

Her music has a light touch throughout. It doesn’t demand attention but its artistry pulls you in nevertheless. Once there you find thoughtful, unselfish lyrics. Peyroux is no love song songbird. Even her songs about romance are about adults and life and baggage.

Anyway, that’s enough of that. Let’s lower the lights and give Madeleine the stage. Enjoy!

Now I don’t want you to go getting any ideas. Just because I’m calling Ms. Peyroux the singer of the week don’t go thinking that we’re going to feature a weekly singer. That kind of commitment is way too much stress and the lounge is a place for hanging out and relaxing – even for me. So, this week we happen to have a singer and it is Ms. Peyroux. Next week we might have another; we might not.
